Mobile optometry, funding, how a visit runs, and the eyewear.
We bring a purpose built clinic vehicle to your address, at home, at work, at school or at an aged care facility. The examination normally takes place in the vehicle, where the instruments are installed and calibrated. Where a school, village or facility prefers it, and for anyone who asks, we can set up in a quiet room instead.
You don't need to do anything beforehand other than letting us know roughly where we'll set up and ensuring there's parking access nearby.
Everything you would find in a typical optometry practice, installed in the vehicle:
The standard of examination is the same as a clinic visit. The instruments stay installed and calibrated between visits.
A comprehensive eye examination usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. If you'd like to choose frames at the same visit, allow another 15 to 20 minutes.
For schools and corporate visits, we generally schedule 20 to 30 minutes per person on a rolling basis.
For retirement villages and aged care we allow a full hour per resident, covering the examination and choosing glasses. Older eyes take longer to assess properly, there is usually more to explain, and there is often a family member in the room. See the aged care page for how a clinic day runs.
Yes. Mobile optometry is regulated by the same registration body (AHPRA) and uses the same Medicare item numbers. The instruments are the same units you would find in a fixed practice.
Not really. A few things help:
If you hold a valid Medicare card, your eye examination is bulk billed with nothing out of pocket, regardless of when your last test was. We recommend a comprehensive examination every 1 to 2 years, and yearly from age 65 or if you have a monitored condition. We take care of the Medicare billing.
For patients without a valid Medicare card, the fee for a comprehensive eye examination is $110.
Additional testing such as visual fields is bulk billed where clinically indicated. Urgent requests outside our published hours: contact us and we will do what we can.
Anyone with a valid Medicare card. Your eye examination is bulk billed with nothing out of pocket, regardless of when your last test was.
We recommend yearly examinations if you're 65 or over, or if you have diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration or another monitored condition. Medicare supports these more frequent visits and we handle the billing.
If you're unsure about anything, ask. We take care of the Medicare side on the day.
MASS is the Queensland Government's Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme: it includes a Spectacle Supply Scheme that subsidises spectacles for eligible Queensland residents.
You're generally eligible if you're a permanent Queensland resident, have held a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Queensland Seniors Card in your own name for at least the 6 months before applying, and your optometrist finds a clinical need for new spectacles. The scheme provides a pair of free basic spectacles every 2 years.
Mention it when you book and we'll handle the MASS paperwork with you.
Yes. Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold and White Cards are billed directly. Mention it when you book.
Yes. We can claim eligible eyewear benefits on the spot with all major private health funds. Bring your private health card to the appointment, or have the details ready.
Optical extras cover varies by fund and policy. We can give you an estimate before you finalise the order.
Three ways:
Because the clinic travels to you, we don't take instant online bookings. Whichever way you get in touch, we'll come back within one business day with a confirmed date and arrival window.
We'll offer you the earliest day our route allows, usually within the month. Once we confirm your booking we'll give you a specific date and a 2 to 3 hour arrival window. As we get closer to the day, we can usually narrow that down to a tighter window.
We treat urgent issues as a priority, including sudden vision changes, foreign bodies, red eye and post operative concerns, and we'll see you as quickly as we can. Call us and we'll talk through the best next step.
For genuine eye emergencies, including sudden vision loss, chemical splash, penetrating injury or severe pain, present to a hospital emergency department or call 000. They are better equipped for acute trauma.
Of course. Give us as much notice as you can, ideally 24 hours, so we can offer the time to someone else. There's no cancellation fee for a genuine reschedule.
Frames are chosen on the day, and the lenses are then made to your prescription at the lab. Standard turnaround is around 2 to 3 weeks for most lens combinations, and longer for high index, prism or specialty orders.
Once your glasses are ready, we deliver and fit them at your home, workplace or facility, no second trip required from you.
Frame only purchases are fine. Browse the collection and buy the frame on its own, or bring it to your next visit and we'll fit it there.
Usually yes. We can fit new lenses to existing frames provided:
We'll assess this at your appointment and let you know before any work begins.
Every frame carries a 12 month hassle free frame warranty, covering manufacturing faults and defects. Accidental damage is not covered, though we can often repair it, or replace the frame at a cost. Lenses are covered against coating defects for 12 months when used with reasonable care.
30 day prescription warranty: if there is a prescription error, or you can't adapt to your new lenses within 30 days of receiving your glasses, contact us. We'll reassess, and replace the lenses where the prescription has changed.
Orders can be changed or cancelled until the end of the day of purchase. After that, prescription eyewear is custom made and cannot be cancelled or returned for change of mind. If something is not right, contact us. Full detail is on our Shipping & Returns page, and nothing in it limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Our contact lens subscription is launching soon, so it is not yet available to order online. Here is how it will work: pick a daily or monthly lens type that suits your prescription, set the supply size (typically 3 or 6 months), and we deliver fresh lenses to your door before you run out. You can pause, skip or change at any time, and we adjust the supply if your prescription changes at your annual contact lens review. In the meantime, ask us about contact lenses at your visit and we will fit and order them for you.
We run full Medicare funded eye examinations on site, the same examination a student would receive in a practice. We coordinate with school administration to schedule classes in 20 to 30 minute blocks, or as the timetable suits, distribute consent forms in advance, and run examinations from the clinic vehicle on school grounds or in a designated quiet space, as the school prefers.
Each parent receives a detailed report after the visit, with clear next steps if their child needs further follow up. If glasses are recommended, parents can arrange those directly with us.
We work with residential aged care facilities, retirement villages, supported independent living houses and community group homes. We visit small facilities and very large ones, and scale the day to fit.
In retirement villages we bring the clinic vehicle for a clinic day, or run it from a room the village provides. Residents enrol individually, and once around five residents at one village have put their names down we confirm a date. Ten fills a day. There is no cost to the village.
In residential aged care and supported living we see residents in the clinic vehicle or a quiet room the facility provides, and can assess a resident at the bedside where they cannot be moved, with consent through the facility and written summaries to the care team and GP. For larger facilities we typically set up a recurring schedule, which makes consent and follow up much smoother.
Full detail is on the retirement villages and aged care page.
Yes. We can run half day or full day on site programs for any workplace: staff are seen in the clinic vehicle parked on site, or in a quiet room if that suits better. We schedule staff in 20 to 30 minute slots through their work calendar and offer prescription eyewear, including computer and office lenses, at the visit. Prescription safety eyewear is coming soon, so ask us about it at your visit. Medicare does not fund employer arranged eye examinations at a workplace, so workplace consultations are privately billed, with private health fund claiming available.
We can also discuss flexible arrangements for shift workers, multi-site businesses, or industries with specific eyewear standards.
For workplace and group bookings we generally need around 6 to 8 people in a session for it to work for everyone. Smaller groups can often be accommodated, so talk to us about timing.
For schools and residential aged care facilities there's typically no minimum. For a retirement village clinic day we look for around five enrolled residents, so the day is worth setting up, and we'll often commit anyway if you're close.
Yes, we examine children, and Medicare bulk billing applies just as it does for adults. Examining a child at home or at school is often easier than asking a tired or anxious child to concentrate in a clinic.
We recommend full eye examinations from around 7 years of age. We can see younger children on home visits, where a longer, relaxed appointment suits them better, and refer on for specialised paediatric assessment where needed. There's no upper age limit.
Yes. Modern myopia control includes specialty contact lenses, low dose atropine drops and defocus spectacle lenses. Each option suits different children and different routines, and we'll discuss what's appropriate during the examination if myopia progression is a concern.
